​HCMR aims to stimulate interest in, and to develop and spread knowledge about the marine environment, mainly focusing in the Eastern Mediterranean area. A new, two-storey, steel, glass and timber building and pavilion was designed to cover its growing needs. The building complex contains a central reception area, administrative offices, education/seminar area and entertainment facilities. The designs, now a property of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, are considered to be incorporated into the construction of the Hellenikon Metropolitan Park. This Park in Athens, when finished, is expected to be the largest urban park in Europe.
